Stand Up for Rural
America Day
June 17, 2008
Every two years Stand Up for
Rural America holds a day long event in Washington D.C. to
raise awareness about Rural America and the
community developers that serve it, helping them gain the attention,
resources and policy support their work deserves.
The 2008 Stand Up for Rural America Day was a fantastic success. Stand Up for Rural America was joined by The National Rural Assembly for a rural policy forum. The focus of the discussion was The Rural Compact, and the four policy opportunity snapshots that have come out of the compact, which are: "Quality in Education;" "Stewardship of our Natural Resources;" Health of our People;" and "Investment in our Communities." The event also included appearances by two surrogates for the Presidential candidates. Senator Sam Brownback appeared as a representative for Senator John McCain, and the Honorable Tom Daschle spoke for Senator Barack Obama. The event was a remarkable success and Stand Up looks forward to more interaction with the National Rural Assembly as we try to shape a policy platform for rural America going forward.
